November brought us 20 to 25 mph winds almost every day. Needless to say, the sight fishing in the lagoons suffered due to the conditions, but the bite remained good on many days if we used live baits or noisy search baits like Skitterwalk plugs. I’ve been concentrating my efforts on areas protected by the winds in the lagoons east of Orlando near Cocoa Beach. Speckled trout are one of the species that have responded well to the noisy top water plugs. Many of the fish we have been catching are small, but this is actually encouraging. These smaller fish are more numerous this year than in years past, so when they grow up they will provide excellent fishing opportunities for my clients in the next few years. Black drum, sheepshead, and snook are all fairly consistent catches as well over the last month. Hopefully the seas offshore of Cocoa Beach will calm a bit in December so we can get out there to search for cobia, tripletail, and giant “bull” redfish in the near-shore waters.
