If you’ve been wondering what the fishing has been like around Port Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, and the Indian River Lagoon, the answer is simple—you truly never know what’s going to show up on the end of your line this time of year.
The recent cold-water upwellings have created some incredible opportunities on our Space Coast fishing charters, producing one of the most diverse bites we’ve seen all summer.
Over the past couple of weeks, my anglers have landed tarpon, snook, redfish, sharks, king mackerel, bluefish, lane snapper, red snapper, black sea bass, black margate, and even some impressive weakfish like the one pictured above.
That’s one of the things I love about August fishing along Florida’s Space Coast. When cooler water from the Labrador Current mixes with our warm Atlantic waters, conditions can change quickly—and every trip becomes a little different. Whether we’re fishing the Indian River Lagoon, the beaches off Cocoa Beach, or the nearshore reefs around Port Canaveral, every day brings the possibility of something unexpected.
The Fall Mullet Run Is Almost Here
As exciting as the current bite has been, one of the best fishing seasons of the year is just around the corner.
The annual Florida Fall Mullet Run typically begins during the first or second week of September and continues into the second or third week of October. Along the Space Coast, this is when schools of mullet migrate down the beaches, drawing hungry snook, tarpon, redfish, sharks, jack crevalle, and other gamefish into a feeding frenzy.
While early mornings consistently produce great action, don’t overlook the afternoons. In fact, the three to four days following both the new moon and full moon often create some of the best midday and afternoon fishing conditions of the season.
If you’re planning a September fishing charter in Cocoa Beach or Port Canaveral, those moon phases are worth keeping in mind when selecting your trip date.
Honestly, I tell people to treat a tarpon fishing trip like they’re preparing for a half-marathon. If you come prepared, you’ll have a much better chance of enjoying every minute of the experience.
