March Fishing Madness near Orlando and Cocoa Beach

By March 22, 2018One Comment

Well March has come, and the fishing this year hasn’t changed a bit from the past few.  It’s either really good or pathetic.  Yep that’s right, I actually had something happen to me this march that has never happened in 21 year as a fishing guide.  I had two half day trips one on the 20th and one on the 22nd where we didn’t catch a single fish.  We couldn’t even get the catfish and puffers to bite our live shrimp!  Talk about frustrating!!  I guess you can’t catch them everyday as the saying goes.  But on some of our other trips, we have had fantastic catches.  Last week we had redfish between 42 and 49 inches in the Indian River using live shrimp as bait.  My clients have also been catching a lot of black drum in the 16 to 40 pound range again this month.  So overall its been pretty good fishing.  The cobia have started to show up along the beaches and near shore water, and sharks and tarpon too.  If you are looking for a great fighting fish, one of these three will definitely fill the bill.  As we progress into the late spring I recommend that my charter clients book near shore trips if they want to catch big fish and flats trips if they want to catch smaller ones.  I’d also like to let everyone know that my oldest favorite son (Justin) has just received his captain’s license and is now running fishing excursions under the Fineline Fishing Charters banner on weekend days.  Those of you that have a hard time getting off to go fishing during the weekdays will notice that my weekend dates are now open for bookings with Captain Justin Ross running the ship.  Last week he put his anglers on redfish to 45 inches, snook to 35 inches, and plenty of black drum as well on his near shore and flats trips that he ran.  I can tell you that I’m pretty proud of him!!  so if you are looking to book a day out on the water in the next few weeks or months give Justin or I a call to set something up, or just go to the websites reservation page to book your next outing with Fineline Fishing Charters.

Lets go catch your next memory!!

Captain Jim Ross
