October Fishing Forecast & Report Thus Far

The weather is great and we wish you were here!

It’s the beginning of October and the fall mullet run is wide open!

Billions of fingerling and full sized mullet are swimming along our Space Coast area beaches and the snook, sharks, tarpon, bluefish, jacks, flounder, speckled trout, redfish and others are doing their best to eat everyone of them. When the conditions will allow us to fish our near-shore waters we have had some really great days out there. As we move into the final months of the year we will see more tripletail and bull reds show up along our beaches.

The mullet are running in the Mosquito, Indian and Banana River lagoons as well.  The grass flats in these protected inshore waters are teaming with life right now and the reds, trout and snook are trying to eat as many of these baitfish as they can to fatten up for the winter.
Flats fishing can be done in a variety of ways- sight or blind casting for fish in the 2 to 3-foot depths of these lagoons covers a lot of water and produces good numbers of fish on calm to light wind days.  Artificial lures like topwater plugs, soft paddle tails or jerk baits, and small spoons do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to our lure selection in these types of conditions.

On windy days its almost always best to make the fish smell what you are cooking.  By this I mean use live or chunk (cut) natural baits and place them where the wind and current can carry the scent through the water column so the fish can smell it and swim right to your offering.  Usually the windier the better in this case until the wind top about 20 knots.  In our lagoon flats you can normally  find a place to hide just out of the winds and catch some really nice fish.

Black Drum action starts to heat up again in the next few weeks.  This is another species that pulls hard and puts a big bend in your rod.  These fish will be here through March.  If you want to try for them look at reserving a trip between November and March.
Right now I am booking for November and beyond, but captain Russ does still have some availability during the October time frame.

Check our online calendar for available dates and lets go catch your next memory!
