The Port Canaveral area is setting up exactly how we want it this time of year. There’s a strong mix of species moving through, and if you know where to look—and how to approach it—you can put together a really quality day on the water. Right now, we’re seeing consistent opportunities on snook, tripletail, redfish, sheepshead, black drum, pompano, and even some medium to large sharks. But instead of overcomplicating things, let’s focus on what’s producing.
A live shrimp on a sliding sinker rig or a ¼-ounce jig head is going to cover a lot of ground for you. That setup will handle most of your inshore targets. When it comes to snook, they can get selective—when that happens, switching over to a live baitfish like croaker, menhaden, mullet, or pinfish is often the difference-maker.
The jetty rocks are a key zone right now. That structure is holding snook, redfish, sheepshead, and black drum, and on the right tide, it can be some of the best action we see all spring. That said, I don’t sit in one spot waiting—if the bite gets tough or the fish get pressured, we move.
That’s when we start working the beaches.
Pompano are a great target along the shoreline, typically cruising that second sandbar or cleaner water outside the surf. You’ll also find whiting mixed into those same areas. For something a little more opportunistic, we keep an eye on tripletail—especially around buoys or any sargassum weed that’s pushed in. If it’s floating, it’s worth checking.
Bottom line—there’s a lot of diversity in this fishery right now, and when you approach it the right way, you can turn that into a full, productive day.
