Hey folks, it’s Capt. Jim Ross here with Fineline Fishing Charters. October has to be one of my favorite months to get out on the water here along the Space Coast. Out of Rockledge, I’m just a short ride to Port Canaveral, the Banana River Lagoon, and the Indian River Lagoon—and this time of year, all of them are full of life.
Most days we’re catching 10–15 different species. Seriously, you never quite know what’s coming next. One cast might be a Bluefish, the next a Snook, and then out of nowhere, a Tripletail or even a Tarpon. That’s what makes October so much fun—it keeps you on your toes.
I like to keep my anglers rigged and ready for anything, because we’ve got Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Redfish, Snook, Tarpon, Mangrove Snapper, Pompano, Tripletail, Black Drum, and plenty more hanging around the jetties, seawalls, beaches, and lagoon flats. A live shrimp is tough to beat this time of year, but goofy jigs, spoons, or a Rapala X-Rap can be just as good. If you’re looking for a bigger bite, finger mullet or menhaden during the day and swimbaits like the Saltwater Assassin Artemis Shad at night will usually get the job done.
